Constitution Day- September 17th:


Did you know that September 17th is Constitution Day? Constitution Day is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is observed on September 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787.

I visited Thomas Jefferson’s home this weekend. I thought that the students would like to see his home and tombstone. Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence … nice connection with Constitution Day being observed tomorrow, September 17th.

Be sure to ask your child what they learned on Constitution Day!

An October 22, 1986, President Reagan signed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA, Public Law 99-519).  The act required the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop regulations for addressing asbestos in public and private elementary and secondary schools.  On October 30, 1987, the EPA published the Asbestos-Containing Materials in Schools Rule (40 CFR Part 763 Subpart E).  This rule stipulated, and our district has complied with, the following key requirements:

  • Identification of asbestos-containing materials in all school buildings.
  • Development and implementation of asbestos management plans for each school.
  • Regular surveillance and reinspections of the condition of asbestos in the buildings.
  • Designation and training of a person to oversee asbestos activities within the district and to ensure compliance with the regulations.

This memorandum is to advise you that asbestos management plans for the district schools were developed following the EPA ruling and subsequently approved by the State of Ohio, Department of Health.  These plans are regularly updated and are available for you to review. 

Should you have any questions regarding this program or would like to review an asbestos management plan, please contact the Board of Education offices during normal business hours.

Morning Visit into Classrooms:

It has been another great start to the school day!  Most mornings, I like to begin my day walking the halls and visiting classrooms.  It is wonderful to see learning in action:   

  • Mrs. Ary and Mrs. Carter’s 1st grade students were using pictures in order to add. (total number of giraffe necks, bird beaks, etc)
  • Mrs. Johnson’s 1st grade classroom was working on place value through counting the number of days that students have been in session this school year.
  • Mrs. Hale’s 1st grade students were practicing counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s by using a 100 chart.
  • Mrs. Staffieria’s 5th grade students were taking their weekly spelling pretest.
  • Mrs. Fowler and Mrs. Evan’s 5th grade students were working on place value of whole numbers.
  • Mrs. Hennessey’s 5th grade literacy students were journal writing about what might inspire people to act courageously. 
  • 4th grade students were DIBELS assessing.  Teachers are assessing student reading fluency.
  • Mrs. Dunn’s 3rd grade students were participating in a phonics lesson regarding c/v and v/c short vowel sounds in words.
  • Mrs. Well’s kindergarten students were practicing correct letter formation of the letters “A/a” and “B/b”.

National Public Lands Day: September 22nd:

Did you know that Saturday, September 22nd is National Public Lands Day?  If you are looking for an activity for your children that promotes being a respectful and responsible community member, consider giving a helping hand.  Volunteers will work together to pick up litter, cleaning up the shoreline, restoring the lands and trail maintenance.

Meet at the Corps of Engineers Tailwater Picnic Shelter at 9:30 am located off of Slade Road at the base of the dam, about 4 1/2 miles south of Batavia. 

Bring a picnic lunch, light refreshments will be provided.  Wear long pants and closed toe shoes or boots.  Call the Rangers at 513-797-6081 for more information and to register for this fun day in the park.

 Dear Parents, Guardians and Teachers,

Welcome back to Amelia Elementary! For those of you who are new to this school, we warmly welcome you to join this big family.

Every year, our PTA helps to oversee the needs and development of the school. We help with raising funds to provide a wide range of educational enrichment programs to our students. The money we raise also helps to fund class trips, books, classroom supplies, and a lot more. During the past years, the PTA has provided learning opportunities that would have otherwise been unavailable to our children. As the new school year begins, we would like to ask for your support so that we can continue making resource and learning opportunities available to our children. We hope that our partnership will pool a wealth of knowledge, talents, skills, and educate our youngsters. Your involvement really does make a difference in your child’s education.

The PTA depends on your annual membership to keep all sorts of wonderful things happening for the children of Amelia Elementary.  This year, we are holding a raffle! Join the PTA by September 30, 2012 and be entered for a chance to win one of four gift baskets which include “Dinner & A Movie”, “Amelia Spirit” and two “Avon”!

Our meetings are generally held on the second Monday of every other month at 3:45 pm. Friday’s Kindergarten Schedule:

Just a reminder that Monday/Wednesday kindergarten students will be in session tomorrow, Friday, September 7th. Can’t wait for another day of learning!
