Amelia Elementary teachers and staff invite you to the 2011-2012 Open House on Thursday, September 1st from 4:30-6:30 pm.  This is a great opportunity to visit classrooms, meet teachers and see old friends.

For the large number of families who have not yet obtained transportation tags, please report to the office in order to secure yours.  Every child MUST have a back-pack tag for dismissal on the first day.  

We can’t wait to see our wonderful Amelia students! 🙂  

 

A Week and Counting…


It is hard to believe that the summer has flown by so quickly.  The Amelia Elementary staff is ready for the start of the 2011-2012 school year.  Although we anticipate many challenges with the loss of transportation, we are excited to have the children back ready to learn.  

 As with every year, we look forward to hearing of the places that our students vacationed, “stay-cation” activities or other summer fun.  Feel free to respond to this post telling of your summer excitement.  Below are a few photos of Amelia staff members enjoying the summer with family!

 The following are important dates:

 Monday, August 29thTransportation Meeting (Please choose either 5:00 or 7:00 to pick-up transportation tags and to hear the procedures for arrival and dismissal.  It is imperative that you attend one of the sessions.

 Thursday, September 1stOpen House 4:30-6:30 pm

 Tuesday, September 6thFirst Day of School  Drop-off and breakfast will begin at 8:45.  Do not release your children until staff members direct you to do so.

 Some pointers worth repeating from the first 2 transportation meetings:

  • Arrival time is 8:45 am
  • Do not be in a hurry.  It will take time for students, parents and staff to become efficient with procedures.  
  • Please do not yell at staff members.  The are doing as directed.  If you have concerns, feel free to direct them to me.  Safety is our primary concern.
  • All students must have a book bag and back-pack tag (bus, walker, family number) must be attached to the backpack.
  • Bike riders MUST wear a helmet.

Collaboration between parents and staff is now more important than ever as we all are trying to do more with less. Amelia is looking forward to a fabulous year of learning and fun, and we thank you in advance for helping to get us off to a great start!

14 Days and Counting…


In two weeks our doors will be opening and our wonderful Amelia Elementary Students will be here!  I simply can’t wait!

As I have sent in previous correspondence, I will be holding 4 different transportation meetings.  The meetings are scheduled for:

  • Thursday, August 25th at 10:00 am
  • Friday, August 26th at 1:00 pm
  • Monday, August 29th at 5:00 or 7:00 pm

The purpose of the meetings are for me to explain the arrival and dismissal procedures and to distribute car and backpack tags that will assist in safely matching students with parents at dismissal.  I realize that the loss of transportation has been very difficult for our families and will be extremely challenging for my staff.  It is very important for us to work together to make the best of a difficult situation.  I appreciate your help and with this.

If you are unable to attend one of the scheduled meetings, I need for you to contact me.  It is critical that you meet with me before the first day of school in order to receive the tag system and understand the procedures.

Mrs. Walker’s Tiger Bites: August 8th:


I hope you are having a great summer with your family.  The teachers and office staff at Amelia are very busy preparing for the start of school!  I would like to welcome the following staff members to the Amelia Elementary family:

  • Mrs. Johnson: 5th grade teacher
  • Mrs. Vastine:  Health Clinic Aide
  • Mrs. Goggin:  Special Education Tutor

In addition to the new staff members, Miss Van Eman will be teaching kindergarten and Mrs. Wolff (Miss Michael) will be moving to second grade.  I am very excited about the staff changes and additions.

Open House: 

On Thursday, September 1st we will have Open House at Amelia Elementary.  Open House is an opportunity to tour the building and meet classroom teachers.  Feel free to stop by anytime during the 4:30-6:30 time frame.

 Parent Meetings:

As you are aware, transportation has been cut to state minimum.  If you do not know if your child is eligible to ride a bus, the West  Clermont website has that information (www.westcler.org).  I have planned four very important meetings for all Amelia parents.  You may choose a meeting that is convenient for you.  At the meeting, you will be given information for drop off and pick up procedures, walkers and bike riders, and how bus transportation will operate.  IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT A PARENT ATTEND ONE OF THESE MEETINGS.  The dates are:  August 25th at 10:00 AM, August 26th at 1:00 PM, and August 29th at 5:00 and 7:00 PM.  Please note that bike riders are required to wear a helmet.  There is paperwork required for all students who will ride a bike or walk. Also remember that bus transportation is only provided for students who live more than 2 miles from school and will only be provided from home. Transportation is not provided from day care centers or baby sitter/relative’s houses or to go home with friends. 

 School Hours:

School hours this year are 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We open the building and start removing students from cars and buses at 8:45.  Students will not be permitted in the building prior, or outside unsupervised, before that time as there will not be adult supervision until 8:45.  Pick up will begin at 2:50.  It is important that all persons picking up and dropping off students know the procedures as we expect as many as 500 cars involved at the beginning and end of the day.  If you do not attend one of the meetings where procedures are explained, please call school prior to opening day.

 Kindergarten Assignments:

Kindergarten students will attend school all day on assigned days.  Students will be assigned either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday.  Friday is a floating day.  A schedule was sent home to all enrolled kindergarten students last week. Kindergarten students will not be assigned classes until Friday of the first week of school.   The first few days of school, teachers will work with the students to provide balanced classes (boy/girl, academic readiness, behaviors).  On Friday, September 9, class lists will be posted in the breezeway by 5:00 PM.  You may check out the lists at your convenience that weekend.  When students arrive at school the following week, students will be directed to the correct class by the kindergarten teachers.  This will not change the day students are assigned to attend.
