1st and 5th Grade Science:

1st Grade Predictions

5th Grade Food Web Activity

The students in Mrs. Carter’s first grade class have been learning about fall.  They conducted a science experiment to find out what color is hiding under the chlorophyll in leaves.  As the students waited for the results, they recorded their color predictions on a class graph using the Smart Board.  They could hardly wait for the chlorophyll to dry to see if their predictions were right or not!

Does a frog eat a grasshopper?  What gives energy to a raccoon?  That’s what Mrs. Evan’s 5th grade classes have been figuring out as they have created food chains in Science.  The students have been in small groups developing food chains showing how energy flows in an ecosystem.  Now they are learning how the food chains interact and become food webs.  They completed an activity last week using yarn to create a large food web.  This week students will be back into small groups creating food webs from their food chains.

Science is in the Air:

Mr. MacFarland Conducting an Experiement

Students Documenting in Science Journals

Mr. MacFarland’s 4th grade students conducted an experiment last week as an opportunity to put into practice the science process skills they had been learning.  The students worked through the scientific method when designing this experiment.  They thought of a question, shared what they knew would happen, developed a process (experiment), carried out the experiment, and then drew conclusions.  A few minor mistakes during our experiment provided a great learning opportunity for everyone involved.  It was a great afternoon of science at Amelia Elementary.

Walker’s Blog Bits: Week of September 27th

Happy Sunday!  I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend.  This is my first of many weekly updates for the   2010-11 academic school year.

PTA Membership Drive:    Just a reminder that a family PTA membership costs $5.00.  Please consider joining in support of your child’s education.  We welcome you to attend PTA meetings as well as volunteer at one of our many family activities.  Please check-out out PTA tab on the top of the page for more information regarding PTA.

School Photo Day:  Mark your calendars… Amelia Elementary’s fall photo day will be Wednesday, October 13th.  Information will be coming home with students shortly.

Study Island:  Students in grades 3-5 have accounts for Study Island, a computer site that assists in preparing students for the Ohio Achievement Assessment.  I highly suggest that you allot a set time per week for students to access Study Island.  The Website is:  http://www.studyisland.com       Each student must have a user name and password.  The username is the student id # and school of attendance and the password is the student id # only.

For Example:   Mrs. Walker’s id # is 12345    My username would be 12345@ae  and my password would be 12345.  Please let me know if you have difficulties logging on and I would be happy to assist you.
